The Winding Pere Marquette River

Friday, June 4, 2021

We are staying with our friend, Tim, for two nights at his cottage on the Pere Marquette National Scenic River.  The river is just about 30' from the front porch and it is a perfect trout stream.  The clear spring fed water winds for miles with alternating deep pools and ripples.  In the photo above, Tom is fly fishing just outside the cottage.  When it comes to trout, steelhead and salmon fishing, the Pere Marquette is one of the best places to catch huge fish.  The river is home to spring steelhead, summertime brown and rainbow trout, fall Chinook and Coho salmon, lake trout and walleye.

The cottage is flooded with morning sun

It looks exactly like a cottage on a river should look.

Tim drops us off a few miles up river and we canoe back down right to his front yard.   The river flows through the Manistee National Forest and there are nice access points for canoe trips of a variety of lengths.

There are lots of turtles hanging out in the sun

Green herons, kingfishers, and dippers keep us company along the waterway
