Thumbs up for Michigan

Thursday , May 13 - rest day - 8 miles back and forth to the dark sky area

The weather is absolutely perfect for our rest day at Crescent Beach State Park.  The sky is blue.  It is much warmer and the winds have died down.  The waves of Lake Huron are gently lapping the shore and our tent is right above the beach.  The beach sand is sugar-white and at one time was prized for glassmaking.

new life is everywhere

We take a walk at the official dark sky preserve and raptor viewing platform.  There is a trail network throughout the woods and dunes so we go birding there.  It is very restful!  The most interesting bird we see is a chipping sparrow and a bunch of swallows.  Here and there we see red-tailed hawks.  We definitely hear orioles and some yellow warblers.

This swan swims between Lake Huron and a little inland lake which is connected via a waterway.

Tonight brings another beautiful sunset.  The lake  is glass smooth.  The neighbors who are camped right next to us tell us all about good places to go in Michigan and give us their contact information in case we cannot find a place to stay on Memorial Day weekend.  They have a little cabin up near the Macinac bridge and Wilderness State Park.

The moon is a thin crescent

Life is good and we are enjoying every mile.  tomorrow we hope to cover about 50 on our way to Bay City area.
