Michigan Shoreline Ride - The Beginning

From the tent we can watch huge freighters traveling the river.  They share the waterway with tiny fishing boats.

During the pandemic winter Tom decided to plan a route for a future trip in the hopes that science would come through with a vaccine and humanity would cooperate to slow (or dare we hope - STOP) the spread of Coid-19.  We do seem to lean toward following waterways when we cycle and traveling in the Great Lakes region seemed like a safe bet.

Tom reconnected with his high school and Boy Scouting friend, Tim and wife, Una, offered to let us leave our car at their home in suburban Detroit.  This makes a convenient starting point for the planned route.  We discover we have been living parallel lives in terms of Scouting and raising children and 30 + years of marriage.
Thanks for the hospitality and for the ride to the State Park!

We estimate the mileage for the journey ahead to be just about 1000 miles and expect to return to Tim and Una's home sometime in mid-June for the drive back home.  We are hoping to embrace "slow travel" and let our bikes lead us to experiencing an emergence from this year and a half of social isolation, uncertainty and anxiety.

  1. Being from Buffalo I have seen many lake freighters. They are impressively long! Enjoy your journey around the lakes.

  2. We tend to do the same...following waterways and when touring in Québec, following the shores of the St. Lawrence is a must.
But you know well about that !
For us, la Gaspésie is still on our bucket list but a no go in 2021 (as for 2020!); since the borders with the US are closed, there is just too much of us, Quebecers, wanting to escape the suburbs and aiming at this outdoor paradise !

It’ll be nice to follow you in real time in this new adventure, not that I want to put pressure on you...not at all !! 😏
