Preparing for rain

October 6, 2019
Brandenburg, KY to Vastwood County Park, Hawesville, KY

This was a long and relatively difficult day of riding.  There were lots of ups and downs along the way capped off by a super steep slope up into the campground.  There is an inch of rain expected overnight so we are hoping to find a site near a pavillion in the little county park where we are headed.

The Ohio River has 20 dams and a system of locks to allow barges to navigate its length.

Why did the turtle cross the road?  Maybe to join all his buddies who had recently also crossed the road.  We stopped and moved quite a few box turtles out of harm's way.  This tiny one is shown on top of Tom's bike bag lid.  It was about the size of a small tangerine.  Don't worry, we always moved those turtles in the direction they were heading.  I hope they stayed off the road after their turtle transfer operation.

Vastwood County Park is in Hancock County.  It has playgrounds, T-ball and soccer fields and a 19 acre lake.  Camping is allowed for $8/tent.  The rain started to fall about an hour before we made it to the campground and we arrived soaking wet.  Luckily, there are several pavilions conveniently located near the tent sites and we plan to wait until dark to set up our tent inside one of them.  First, it's time to make some dinner.

I am cooking pasta with fresh zucchini and tomatoes.

The park has a pizza place too.  We order hot bread sticks and a big salad for delivery.  What service!

YUMMY!

Right next to our site is an Osage Orange Tree.  Have you ever heard these things hitting the ground?  They were falling with regularity throughout the night and we could hear them even with the steady sound of the rain on our roof.  They startled us every time.  Sometimes they would bounce and roll right into the pavillion.

I don't have a photo of our sweet arrangement for the tent in the pavillion.  We were grateful that we could sleep under shelter and pack up a dry tent in the morning.
