Clifty Falls State Park to Charlestown State Park
40.2 miles

Drought conditions mean that Clifty Falls is dry.  Every creek we crossed today was a dry bed.

The soybean fields are very dry too.

We finally encountered another long distance cyclist along our route.  This firefighter from Washington state was riding cross country in a fundraiser ride for disabled veterans.  He had ridden with his group in a van-supported ride from Washington to Colorado and then continued across the country on his own. He is planning to finish in New York City on October 12th.  He was following the same Adventure Cycling map we are using. (in the opposite direction)  He told us he had not seen another long distance cyclist in three weeks - and he is riding 100 miles per day!

This is one of the three stores we passed today.  All are closed.

We ride for miles and miles past windy corn fields, dry soybean fields, houses and farms.  It is still 95 degrees in the afternoon and the record heat is expected to break tonight.  The locals we talk to say it hasn't rained even one day in September and every high temperature record ever set has been broken.
