A short ride day with a lot of history to learn

Corydon, Indiana to Brandenburg, KY

Corydon is in the extreme southern part of Indiana right on the Ohio River.  It served as the capital of the Indiana territory and then as the state's first capital.  It is a beautiful and historic town and actually receives quite a few visitors every year.  There are festivals held here year round though none were going on during our visit.  We did get to have supper in a cool bar and listen to music since our campsite was so close to town.  We didn't have to go to sleep just because it was dark!  That was nice.

Our less than scenic campsite right behind the RV Park owner's home
the view from our tent - nothing to write home about here but it was a short walk to the town.

Because there are very few camping options over the next three days, we rode just 21.3 miles and arrived in Brandenburg  after lunch.  We are staying in a hotel tonight and will camp tomorrow in Hawesville, KY.    Our hotel is up on the bypass and the ride to the actual town is a VERY steep downhill path to the river.  There is a nice park in the floodplane and it turns out we probably could have camped down there.  Maybe.

This tug is pushing a huge barge downstream.

The Brandenburg Ferry, owned by the Bell family of Brandenburg was an important station on the Underground Railroad.  In 1857, a border war between Indiana and Kentucky was barely averted when Bell family members were released from jail for aiding an escaped slave.  Oswell Wright, a free man of color and conductor on the Railroad ended up serving five years in prison for aiding that same escaped slave.

The only thing to do in Brandenburg once you are finished watching the barges and reading all the historical markers is Ax Throwing.  We definitely had to try that!

beer and ax throwing - what could go wrong?

Tom showing off some skills!  Both of us were successful despite the beer!
