Heading down Route 1

Day 8:  Friday, March 8, 2019
Butler Beach (South St. Augustine to Ormand-by-the-Sea, Florida
34.8 miles
We decide to get a very early start in hopes of missing some motorcycle traffic

There are hundreds of motorcycles here for Bike Week.  Daytona Beach is the epicenter of  bike week  and we can't wait to get past it.  It is a spectacle to see, but the motorcycles certainly complicate our riding and make it difficult to find accomodation.  The state parks and hotels are totally booked and our plan tonight is to sleep behind a bicycle shop.  I called the owner and he graciously offered to let us stay there.  But, it's not my first choice.
At our lunch stop Tom starts talking to a fellow cyclist and he says he knows a lady who has just listed a room on AirBnB.  We meet her and agree to stay there.  The room is clean and comfortable and we are just happy to have a place to crash.  She gives us a beach umbrella and a blanket and we spend the afternoon and evening at the beach.
It is a beautiful day to watch the waves on the shore

Day 9:  Saturday, March 9, 2019
Ormand Beach to New Smyrna Beach
34.6 miles
A nice bike trail right next to the road
It is a beautiful morning to ride.

Today's ride is uneventful.  We are keeping the mileage low and the weather is really nice.  The ride is flat and we take lots of long rests.  We stop at Spruce Creek Park for quite a while and try to make some future plans for overnight stays.

The State park ranger tells me I needed to make my reservation 11 months and 2 weeks ago.   I guess I missed that window of opportunty.  Tonight we are camping at New Smyrna Beach RV Park.  I am not usually the biggest fan of RV parks, but the owner is super nice.  She actually tells me to camp for free because I am the only tent camper.  Most of the sites are either seasonal campers or guys who are here for Bike Week.  It is a quiet place and we go up to the pool to hang out and eat our grocery store dinner.

we are the only tent in the park

Day 10:  Sunday, March 10, 2019
New Smyrna Beach to the Space Coast
45.2 miles  - from mile 25 on into a head wind.
Not only do we get to camp for free at this campground, but there is free coffee in the office.  So this day is off to a great start.

free coffee?  that sounds good.

We continue riding down the Old Dixie Highway, Route 1.
There is a really great place to stop for ice cream.
Frisbees ice cream has lots of flavors of soft serve

At the end of the day we got a few glimpses of the Kennedy Space Center across the bay.  We are staying at a warm showers host tonight and tomorrow we plan to tour the Space Center all day.
