To Canada

Day 15

Jacques Cartier State Park to Robert Moses State Park

Memorial Day Parade in Ogdensburg.  The parade lasted about twenty minutes (literally) and consisted of the American Legion, the Girl Scouts, the blue devils high school band, and some veterans on Harley’s.  Before the parade we had a great breakfast at the local diner with just about every other town resident.

This is the New York state park located as far north as you can go in the 1000 islands area.  It is located near a huge power dam and a lock.  We heard a big ship going through the lock at night.  The next day we visited the visitor center and read about the enormity of the St. Lawrence Seaway project.

We must pass through the tunnel underneath the lock.  It offered the trifecta of grooved pavement, metal grates and a very steep uphill exit.  Fortunately, there was no traffic when we went through.

Day 16

Robert Moses State Park to Glengarry Park in Ontario

Crossing to Canada on the Seaway International Bridge

Tom pauses on the bridge to Canada.  This is just before his bike mirror falls off into the traffic lane.

I am still in the USA, but, Tom’s bike is in Canada.  Once we crossed we had to go talk to the immigration agent, since our answers were vague on where we were intending to stay and how long we would be in Canada.  When we said we were going to cycle to Newfoundland, we were quickly directed to the agent inside.  At least we didn’t have to unpack our bikes!

Our campsite has its own little dock with a picnic table

Full moon rising
It was a clear night and we left the rain fly off the tent.  The moon rose just outside our window.

Great Campsite

Day 17

Glengarry to Saint Lazare

We have a much needed rest at Julia's friend's brother's house.  Richard and Kate give us a warm welcome and show us around their town.  We even enjoy a great night of music in nearby Hudson and their yummy homemade tourtiere.
