on to Eagle Harbor

Day 6:  Buffalo to Eagle Harbor along the Erie Canal
May 19, 2018

We rode out of Buffalo through the city and then along a very scenic bikeway early on Sunday morning.  The traffic was very light and the sun was shining.  The wind was pushing us now.  There were more arctic terns along the waterway catching their breakfast.
There are four locks at Lockport

Our route turned northeast along Tonawanda Creek as we left the Niagara River.  Ohio friends:  Tonawanda Creek is about the size of the Cuyahoga in Kent.  At Lockport we picked up the official start of the Erie Canal and the surface changed from beautiful new pavement to sandy mud.  The distance from Lockport to our intended endpoint is about 40 miles bringing our total close to 70 miles.  Since that's an impossible distance (for Julia on a loaded bike) we re-route finding a  road which parallels the canal.  After passing the town of Medina, we cut back to the canal to stealth camp.  Tomorrow we hope to make it to Rochester.
