Let the cycling trip begin

Day 1:  home to Mosquito Lake State Park.  46 miles.  elevation gain: 1673'
Julia's bike and gear total weight = 75 pounds
Tom's bike and gear total weight = 99 pounds

We left home under sunny skies but after about an hour the clouds began to gather.  We decided to wait out the thunderstorms in Garrettsvile and relaxed at the library for a couple of hours.  There was light rain the rest of the day, but the temperature was comfortable and there was very little traffic (Monday morning... ) so the roads felt safe despite being wet.
We saw 14 different species of birds including purple martins, tree swallows, wood ducks, and kingbirds.
The campground is very wet and there is standing water everywhere.  Luckily, I am married to an engineer and he managed to find a bit of well-drained gravel on which to pitch the tent.  The go-lite tarp and some well-placed sticks make an awesome dining room.  This will come in handy tomorrow morning as showers are predicted.

A toast to good health and lots of downhill riding with the wind at our backs.

Just head down the driveway and turn left toward Newfoundland!

We rode about 20 miles to Garrettsville and decided to stop at the library to wait out the thunderstorms.  A couple of hours and three magazines later we headed out into a light rain.

Next on the agenda:  cooking some noodles and one very heavy can of chicken.  We are nourished and my food bag is lighter.  yay!

It is a beautiful evening and the sky looks clear for now.

The go-lite tarp makes the best dining room around.

Mosquito Lake.  I think it is aptly named.  There is standing water all over this campground.

Here is the map showing day 1's progress:  We had very little traffic on quiet country roads.
