A 450 bottle wine cellar

Day 7
May 20, 2018
Eagle Harbor to Webster, NY

through Rochester to Randy’s house

We make great time with the wind at our back and continue to avoid the now even muddier canal path.  The traffic becomes a little heavier as we draw closer to Rochester.
Genesee Brew House

The 140 year old Genesee Brewing Company has a museum in their old brew house.  There are lots of old documents and photos dating back to original pay stubs and record books from the early days of the business.  One photo, taken during prohibition,  shows sad-faced liquor control officials dumping perfectly good beer into the river.

Randy lives on the far northeast side of Rochester in a little town.  His place is easy to find since we can just keep heading toward the lakeshore.  He welcomes us with a spot in his garage for our bikes and a cold beer on his deck.  His house has a lot of bedrooms and ours looks out over Lake Ontario and is so cozy and comfortable I think maybe this is as far as I need to go on this bike ride. There really is a 450 bottle wine cellar in this house, and after our visit, I think Randy and Claudia will need to go on a wine buying trip to replenish it.  We spend the evening eating delicious homemade ribs and hearing about Randy's many adventures by bike.

At age 70 he completed a  solo self-supported ride from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, Florida.  Across Texas.  In the heat.  While breaking spokes.  I want to be this fearless when I am 70.

This is just one of his many long distance cycling journeys.  Randy is abundantly generous to us with his home, his time, his stories, and the knowledge he has gained from his many life experiences.  We leave his home rested and well-fed and so much richer for having met him and his fiancee.

    1. It is a drag. Take the road. NY bike route 5 (roads) is great and you get to experience more of the trail towns.
